Custom checkout fields
Custom fields let you collect extra information along with a payment, beyond the standard email, phone, and address. Use them for an order note, an account or membership ID, a gift message, a size, or anything specific to your business.
Custom fields are set on each payment link, so different links can ask different questions.
Adding a custom field
- Open a payment link, or start a new one under Payments, then Payment Links.
- Click More options to expand the extra settings.
- Under Custom fields, click Add field.
- Type a label. This is the question the customer sees, for example "Order note" or "Account ID".
- Choose the field type (see below).
- Turn on Req if the customer must answer this field before they can pay.
- Save the link, or click Save changes if you are editing an existing one.
You can add as many fields as you need. To remove one, click the trash icon next to it.
Field types
- Text. A single line, good for short answers like a name, an ID, or a brief note.
- Text area. A larger, multi-line box for longer notes or instructions.
- Number. Accepts numbers only.
- Dropdown. The customer picks from a list of options you provide. After choosing this type, click Add option for each choice.
- Checkbox. A single tick box, useful for an agreement or an opt-in.
Required and optional fields
- Turn on Req to make a field required.
- Required fields must be filled in before the customer can pay.
- Optional fields can be left blank.
Only require what you truly need. Every required field adds a small step for the customer.
What the customer sees
If a link has any custom fields, the checkout opens on a short screen that asks for them, before the payment form. Required fields must be completed to continue, and optional ones can be skipped. Once the customer continues, they pay as normal.
Where the answers go
Each answer is saved with the payment. You can find them in three places:
- On the payment's transaction detail page in your dashboard, under Additional details.
- On the confirmation page the customer sees right after paying.
- In the customer's portal, on that transaction.
See Transaction details for the full transaction view.
Editing fields later
Open the link, change, add, or remove fields, and click Save changes. Your edits apply to future checkouts. Answers already collected on past payments stay exactly as they were captured.
Tips
- Keep labels short and clear so customers know exactly what to enter.
- Prefer a dropdown or checkbox over free text when the answer should be one of a few known choices. This keeps your data tidy and easy to filter.
