The checkout experience

When someone opens one of your payment links, they land on a checkout page that Paysio hosts and secures for you. This guide is a tour of that page from your customer's point of view. It is useful for answering support questions and for knowing what to check before you share a link.

You do not build any of this here. The checkout is put together automatically from your link, your products, and your checkout settings.

Your branding at the top

Every checkout shows your workspace name and logo, in your colors. You control this in Checkout appearance.

If you are testing in sandbox mode, an orange Test mode banner appears at the very top so no one mistakes it for a real charge. See Sandbox mode.

The order summary

The checkout shows a summary of what the customer is buying, with a running total. On a computer it sits beside the payment form, and on a phone it collapses to save space.

The total breaks down into:

  • Subtotal, the price of the products.
  • Tax, if any of your products collect it.
  • Shipping, if any of your products charge a shipping fee.
  • Discount, if a code is applied.
  • Total, the final amount to pay.

Tax and shipping come from each product's settings. See Tax and shipping fees.

Choosing what to buy

Depending on how you set up the link, the customer may be able to change a few things:

  • Quantity. If you turned on adjustable quantity, they can pick how many, within the minimum and maximum you set.
  • Variant. If a product has options like Size or Color and the link is not locked to one, they choose the variant here. See Variants and options.
  • Their own price. For a name-your-price product, they type the amount, within any limits you set.
  • Upsells. Any add-on products you offered appear so they can add them in one tap. See Upsells.

Contact details

  • Email is always required. It is where the receipt goes and how a returning customer is recognized.
  • Phone is required by default, with a country-code picker for international numbers. You can make it optional in Checkout options.
  • Address fields offer autocomplete suggestions as the customer types, so they can fill an address quickly.

Paying faster as a returning customer

If the customer has paid you before, checkout can be nearly instant:

  1. As they type their email, Paysio quietly checks whether they already have saved payment methods with you.
  2. If they do, they can request a one-time code, sent by email or text message.
  3. After they enter the code, their saved cards and bank accounts appear, and they pay in one tap.

They can always choose to enter a new card instead. See Saved payment methods.

Ways to pay

Which options show up depends on your checkout settings and your processor:

  • Card. Card number, expiry date, and security code.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay. Shown when you have enabled them and the customer's device supports them. Apple Pay is hidden for subscription products and is not available in test mode. Google Pay supports subscriptions when the customer selects a reusable card; device-token-only cards are not offered for recurring checkout.
  • Bank payment (ACH). The customer enters a routing number and account number, and picks checking or savings and personal or business.

You control which methods are available in Checkout options.

The card fee and paying by bank

If you add a card surcharge, the card price includes that fee. When bank payments are on, the checkout can show a slightly lower "pay this with bank" amount next to the total, nudging customers toward the cheaper option. This is called dual pricing, and it is set up in Checkout options.

Shipping address

If your link collects a shipping address, the customer enters where the order should go. There is a "same as billing" shortcut so they do not type the address twice. See Tax and shipping fees.

Discount codes

If you allow discounts, a field lets the customer enter a code. A valid code lowers the total right away, and the discount shows in the summary. See Discount codes.

Questions asked before payment

If your link has custom fields, the customer answers them on a short screen before the payment form appears. Fields you mark as required must be filled in to continue, while optional fields can be left blank. See Custom checkout fields.

Extra security check (3-D Secure)

Some card payments trigger a security check from the customer's bank, called 3-D Secure. The customer completes a quick verification in a secure window, then the payment finishes on its own. This is normal and Paysio handles it for you. The result is recorded on the payment, see Transaction details.

Subscriptions at checkout

For a recurring product, the checkout clearly shows the recurring amount and when the next charge will happen, so the customer knows what they are signing up for. Their card is saved so Paysio can bill each cycle automatically. See How subscriptions work.

After they pay

The customer lands on a confirmation page and receives an emailed receipt, which includes a link to their customer portal. See Receipts and confirmations.

Testing your checkout

Before sharing a link with real customers, walk the whole checkout yourself:

  1. Turn on sandbox mode.
  2. Open the link and go to the checkout page.
  3. Pay with the test card 4111 1111 1111 1111, any future expiry, and any security code.
  4. Try changing quantities and variants, applying a discount code, filling custom fields, and entering a shipping address, so you can confirm everything looks right.

See Sandbox mode for more on testing.
